National Tartan Day

April 5, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Tartan Day‘It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom – for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself.’ ~ Extract from the Declaration of Arbroath, 1320.

On April 6, America honors its Scottish roots by celebrating Tartan Day, established in 1998 to commemorate Scotland’s Declaration of Arbroath which was written in 1320 and is one of the inspirations for the Declaration of Independence.

11 million Americans claim Scottish roots making Scottish Americans the 8th largest ethnic ethnic group in the United States. If you include those who enjoy a sip of whisky, a round of golf or the concept of popular rule, it’s safe to say that we’re all Scots in a way, at least for the day.

Sean Connery takes this opportunity to opine in the LATimes on Scotland’s journey toward Independence and on his hopes that Scotland will become one of the united kingdoms instead of simply part of the United Kingdom.
